Hula

A homage to lauhala weaving and the mongo shells of Pacific shell leis.

Some of life’s most formative memories live in the landscape of childhood. For me, it is the breathtaking canopy of Kipapa Gulch with those towering trees glimpsed through a car window on Saturday mornings, my mother driving my sisters and I to hula, the world outside shimmering with possibility. Hula has never left me. It has travelled with me through Los Angeles, New York City, and now here in London, an invisible thread connecting me always to home.

The Lauhala Twist Earrings and Woven Rosette Earrings are a homage to the magnificent Hala tree. To the way its leaves cascade and curve with a quiet, unhurried grace. Lauhala weaving is an ancient and revered craft; those same leaves have long been fashioned into baskets, bowls, and adornments of remarkable artistry. These pieces capture that same meditative beauty, reimagined in fine jewellery.

The Mongo Shell Earrings draw from a tradition just as deeply rooted. Mongo shells are cherished throughout the Pacific and commonly used in shell leis. They are sourced from the Philippines, where the ocean yields shells of extraordinary variety and abundance. For me, the mongo shell carries a more intimate resonance: it is the shell that shares its name with my favourite dish, the one I ask my mother to cook every time I return home.

Like hula itself, these pieces are more than adornment. They are a way of carrying home with you, wherever in the world you find yourself.
